The region was founded on July 17, 1924. It is located in the south-eastern part of the Minsk oblast, 153 km away from Minsk.
The administrative centre is the town of Luban. The region occupies 1,900 square kilometres. The population of the region is 38,049. There are 126 population centres.
The Luban region borders on the Soligorsk, Slutsk and Starye Dorogi regions of the Minsk oblast, the Oktyabrskiy, Petrikovichi and Zhitkovichi regions of the Gomel oblast.
The region is divided into ten rural councils: Urechye, Kommuna, LYAKHOVSKY, Maly Gorodyatichk, Osovets, Rechen, Sorochi, Sosny, Tal and Yushkovichi.
The biggest population centres of the region are Urechye (3,387), Sorochi (1,349), Tal (1,187), Sosny (1,154), Osovets (1,004), and Kuzmichi (951).
The population of the region is 38,049 (17,906 men (47.1%) and 20,143 women (52.9%)).
The urban population is 15,139 (or 39.8%), rural 22,910 (60.2%).
Some 19.3% (7,356) of the regional population are under working age, 24.4% (9,299) are over working age.
